Convocatoria internacional busca soluciones disruptivas para dar un uso sustentable a los relaves de cobre
La iniciativa está dirigida a empresas innovadoras, startups, consorcios, centros de investigación y universidades de todo el mundo. Las postulaciones estarán abiertas hasta el 21 de agosto en www.tailingschallenge.com; y el proceso terminará con un demo day en marzo de 2023.
En la oportunidad el Ministro de Minería, Baldo Prokurica, valoró que la iniciativa promueva el desarrollo de soluciones que le permitan a la minería ser más sustentable y competitiva en el tiempo.
Una convocatoria internacional que busca contribuir a una economía más sustentable, dándole un nuevo uso a los relaves de cobre, lanzó esta mañana BHP en una transmisión vía streaming.
La iniciativa BHP Tailings Challenge está dirigida a empresas innovadoras, startups, consorcios, centros de investigación y universidades de todo el mundo. Se espera que estas instituciones desarrollen soluciones tecnológicas disruptivas y nuevos modelos de negocios que permitan reutilizar los relaves de cobre, convirtiéndolos en productos comerciales tales como nuevos materiales u otras aplicaciones.
El desafío, que se realiza con el apoyo de Fundación Chile, a través del programa de innovación abierta en minería, Expande, pondrá a disposición de los desarrolladores un capital de US$10 millones.
Durante el lanzamiento, el Ministro de Minería, Baldo Prokurica, valoró que la iniciativa promueva el desarrollo de soluciones que le permitan al sector ser más sustentable y competitivo en el tiempo, haciendo énfasis que en “los últimos años hemos sido testigos de los pasos concretos que está dando la minería nacional para convertirse en una actividad más verde que promueva la eficiencia energética, hídrica y la reducción de la huella ambiental”.
En esa dirección destacó el Plan Nacional de Depósitos de Relaves que se hace cargo de una deuda histórica que ha tenido el Estado con las regiones mineras y las iniciativas tendientes a generar una mayor eficiencia hídrica, tales como “la inversión en plantas desaladoras que hoy están reciclando hasta el 86% del agua y otras que están utilizando agua de mar, proyectando que al 2030 un 74% del volumen de agua que utilizarán los proyectos mineros nuevos provendría de los océanos”.
Finalizó señalando que “la minería es fundamental para el desarrollo de Chile, pero siempre debe estar supeditada a los criterios sanitarios y al respeto al medio ambiente y sus comunidades. Será la minería la que nos entregará una palanca indispensable para enfrentar la post pandemia con generación de empleo y desarrollo para el país, porque la minería nunca le ha fallado a Chile”.
Por su parte, Bryan Quinn, Asset President Joint Ventures de BHP, indicó que “esta iniciativa es una gran oportunidad para conectarnos con distintos actores de todo el mundo y trabajar en conjunto en uno de los desafíos más grandes que la industria enfrenta, ahora y en el futuro. Estamos buscando gente brillante que pueda traer ideas y soluciones innovadoras para ayudarnos a pensar de manera distinta la gestión del manejo de relaves. No se trata de hacer más de lo mismo a través de pequeñas mejoras, sino que de cambiar la forma en que entregamos mejores resultados para el futuro, en términos de manejo de relaves”.
Marcos Kulka, Gerente General de Fundación Chile, agregó que “el mundo actual, variable, incierto, complejo y ambiguo (VUCA) nos ha obligado desde hace muchos años a explorar infinitas posibilidades para dar curso a iniciativas que marquen una diferencia, que sean transformacionales y que generen valor real para las empresas, para el mundo del emprendimiento, de la formación y la sociedad como un todo. BHP Tailings Challenge, se presenta hoy como una oportunidad concreta de generación de actividad en el sector, en un contexto marcado por la crisis sanitaria y económica. Es una señal clara que desde Chile se está gestionando innovación de punta en minería y nos posiciona a la cabeza en iniciativas disruptivas orientadas a sustentabilidad”.
Los interesados deben demostrar capacidades de ejecución para llevar a cabo pruebas de laboratorio/concepto lo suficientemente robustas que permitan justificar el paso a un piloto en ambiente operacional.
El proceso finalizará con un demo day en marzo de 2023, instancia en la que se anunciarán el o los ganadores que hayan sido capaces de abordar el desafío planteado por BHP Tailings Challenge, habiendo desarrollado una solución de reutilización de relaves factible desde el punto de vista técnico y de inversión.
Andrés Mitnik, Director de Negocios de Expande, enfatizó que “llevar a cabo un desafío de la complejidad de BHP Tailings Challenge requiere de un profundo entendimiento de los procesos de innovación como también de una red global capaz de atraer el estado del arte de la tecnología y las últimas tendencias en modelos de negocios sustentables.
