Latam se acogió a Ley de Quiebra de EE.UU. y sus acciones cayeron a su menor valor en 17 años

La firma aérea Latam Airlines Group se acogió al famoso Capítulo 11 de la Ley de Quiebras de EE.UU durante esta semana, esto debido a su delicada situación financiera producto de las medidas restrictivas para enfrentar el coronavirus. De esta forma, entró en un proceso de reestructuración para reducir sus deudas, obtener nuevo financiamiento y transformar al grupo de aerolíneas, proceso en el cual la familia Cueto y Qatar Airways comprometieron US$ 900 millones.
Esta acción le permitirá a la aerolínea seguir operando mientras elabora un plan para pagar a sus acreedores y reestructurar sus operaciones ante la crisis que ha generado en la industria aeronáutica la pandemia de Covid-19.
En tanto, las noticias desde la Bolsa de Comercio de Santiago no son muy alentadoras tras esta decisión, ya que el papel de la compañía cayó un 44,45% este miércoles en la Bolsa de Comercio de Santiago, con lo que registró su mayor caída de un día desde que hay registros, según datos de Bloomberg. Con esto, el título quedó ubicado en $ 711, su menor valor desde mayo de 2003.
Por su parte, el CEO de Latam Airlines, Roberto Alvo, señaló que acogerse al Capítulo 11 no significa ni la liquidación ni la quiebra de la aerolínea. «Es un marco legal que está diseñado para permitir a las compañías pausar, reorganizar sus deudas, adaptarse más rápidamente al nuevo entorno, redimensionar más eficientemente al grupo y asegurar nuevas fuentes de financiación. Durante este proceso las operaciones del grupo continuarán de manera usual y esta decisión no afectará nuestras medidas para retomar las operaciones”, sostuvo el ejecutivo.
Desde el Gobierno, y en medio del debate sobre la ayuda financiera a las grandes compañías, el Ministro de Hacienda, Ignacio Briones, indicó que “evaluará la conveniencia y oportunidad para contribuir al éxito del proceso de reorganización de Latam”.
Por otra parte, Tomás Flanagan, desde Bci Corredores de Bolsa, estimó que este negativo escenario para Latam «continuará impactando fuertemente operaciones de la compañía durante segundo trimestre de 2020 y tercer trimestre. Asimismo, estimamos que la recuperación será́ gradual y solo de carácter parcial durante 2021».
La familia Cueto, en tanto, asumió un compromiso de financiamiento por US$ 300 millones para Latam Airlines Group. Con esta información, se deduce que los restantes US$600 millones corren por parte de Qatar Airways, que es dueña del 10% de Latam. Delta, por su parte, que dueña del 20% de la compañía, no hará aporte alguno.
Con todo esto, el máximo ejecutivo de la firma, Roberto Alvo, explicó precisamente que la idea de acogerse al Capítulo 11 es que hace que sea mucho más atractivo prestar plata. No obstante, esos US$900 millones no son suficientes, “especialmente porque no sabemos todavía cómo esta crisis se va a desarrollar”, resaltó.
