Banco Central publicó documento con comportamiento histórico de inflación en Chile

Durante la jornada de este martes 22 de diciembre, el Banco Central publicó el documento “Dinámicas y Determinantes de la Inflación en Chile”, que resume un conjunto de investigaciones propias y de otras entidades respecto del comportamiento histórico de la inflación en Chile, sus dinámicas de corto y mediano plazo, y el rol que cumple el marco de política monetaria en la determinación de las expectativas de inflación.
Además, en el documento se presenta un análisis y caracterización de la inflación, así como las dinámicas de precios en Chile desde una perspectiva empírica. De acuerdo con el BC, su relevancia radica en que el entendimiento de estas dinámicas son claves para comprender el manejo de la política monetaria, sus mecanismos de transmisión y su efectividad.
“Dado que en el largo plazo la inflación se asocia al crecimiento excesivo de la cantidad de dinero, su comportamiento promedio depende críticamente de la política monetaria. Por esto, la principal contribución de un Banco Central a la sociedad es garantizar una inflación baja y estable”, indica el informe.
Según describe la entidad bancaria, “la autonomía del BC con un objetivo explícito de estabilidad de precios y la disciplina fiscal, han sido hitos claves para lograr una inflación baja y estable en los últimos 20 años. Es interesante constatar que esto se dio en conjunto con uno de los períodos más prolongados de alto crecimiento en la historia de Chile”.
De acuerdo a la cifras entregadas por el BC, desde que comenzó la autonomía del BC, en 1989, el promedio del IPC es 5,6%, mientras que el promedio de la década de 2011-2020 se encamina a registrar una variación de 3,1%, la más baja de la historia. Previo a la autonomía, la inflación promedio superaba con creces estas cifras. Por ejemplo, el promedio de la década del 80 fue de 20,3% y 174% entre 1971-1980.
