Falleció Ángela Jeria, madre de expresidenta Michelle Bachelet, con 93 años

Ángela Jeria, arqueóloga y madre de la expresidenta Michelle Bachelet, falleció este jueves 2 de julio a la edad de 93 años, quien había sido internada el miércoles en el Hospital de la Fuerza Aérea, donde permanecía grave. Sin embargo, su estado de salud no tenía relación con el Covid-19.
Tras conocer la noticia, la Alta Comisionada para los DD.HH. habría viajado de inmediato a Chile, así se lo comentó Bachelet al Presidente Sebastián Piñera durante un diálogo por WhatsApp que ambos sostuvieron y en el que el Presidente le dio el pésame por el deceso, según comentaron fuentes de gobierno.

Horas después de su fallecimiento, desde el Gobierno emitieron un comunicado donde se indicó que “el Presidente de la República, Sebastián Piñera Echenique, expresa su pesar por el sensible fallecimiento de la Sra. Ángela Jeria Gómez y extiende sus sentidas y sinceras condolencias a la ex Presidenta Michelle Bachelet y a toda su familia”.
La vocera de Gobierno, Karla Rubilar, también entregó su pésame, y entregó “las condolencias a su familia. Un profundo sentido de pérdida de la señora Ángela Jeria, ella tuvo una vida muy difícil, muy dura. Pero, sin embargo, donde iba y estaba siempre fue muy unitaria. Amorosa, cariñosa, atenta, tengo la mejor de las impresiones de ella, acompañando siempre a su hija. Yo creo que a ninguno de nosotros se nos borrará ese cariño entrañable que tenemos las mamás por nuestros hijos”.
Durante toda su vida, Ángela Jeria cultivó una estrecha relación con su hija, y durante el exilio ambas viajaron por el mundo denunciando la represión y las violaciones a los derechos humanos que se estaban cometiendo en Chile. Tras su retorno al país y luego de que Bachelet se convirtiera en la primera mujer en ocupar el cargo de Presidenta, Jeria ejerció funciones de “primera dama”, acompañando a la mandataria en numerosos actos oficiales y apoyándola en el cuidado de sus hijos.
En 2017, la hoy Alta Comisionada para los Derechos Humanos, le dedicó unas sentidas palabras a su madre a través de una carta publicada en una revista, en donde agradeció que “hayas sido mi compañera más cercana en los mejores momentos y también en los más angustiosos. Una compañera inspiradora, fuerte, digna y resiliente, pero también una presencia cercana, cariñosa y apoyadora”, agregó la en ese entonces presidenta.
Jeria, quien nació en Talca el 22 de agosto de 1926, era esposa del general Alberto Bachelet. Tuvieron dos hijos, Alberto y la expresidenta. Antes del golpe de Estado, se desempeñó en la Universidad de Chile, tanto en la Editorial Universitaria (1948-1958), como en la Oficina de Presupuesto y Finanzas de la Universidad, donde incluso llegó a ser Directora de Finanzas de la Universidad. Pero cuando Alberto Bachelet falleció de un infarto al interior de la Cárcel Pública de Santiago, tras ser detenido y torturado, partió junto a su hija al exilio en Australia, la Unión Soviética y la República Alemana Oriental, esto tras ser detenidas por la Dirección Nacional de Inteligencia y torturadas en Villa Grimaldi y Cuatro Álamos.
